Department of Family Medicine News:

US News and World Report has ranked UNC Family Medicine Number Two in the Nation!

Tim Daaleman talks to WCHL about this honor.

URGENT:  Dean Roper’s office has undertaken an initiative to evaluate ways to help departments and the school to further improve our recognition and reputation.  To help them in the process, they are collecting any individual or group awards given to our faculty, staff or unit in the past 18 months. Please email any awards, nominations or honors to Donna Parker before November 3rd!

Bob Gwyther was quoted prominently in an article published by AMEDNews, the print and online news publication for physicians published by the American Medical Association. In 'Counseling on alcohol helps patients and is billable' (http://www.ama-assn.org/amednews/2011/10/17/bica1017.htm)

The study below was conducted at UNC.  Our Family Medicine Center was a site for the study and Sam Weir participated as a researcher.

Study: Obesity limits effectiveness of flu vaccines:
People carrying extra pounds may need extra protection from influenza. New research from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill shows that obesity may make annual flu shots less effective. The findings, published online on Oct. 25, 2011, in the International Journal of Obesity, provide evidence explaining a phenomenon that was noticed for the first time during the 2009 H1N1 flu outbreak: that obesity is associated with an impaired immune response to the influenza vaccination in humans.

UNC Family Medicine participated in Project Connect on October 13th in Chapel Hill.  Project Connect is a FREE all-day event for all community members who are homeless or at risk to become homeless.  The event is held every year at the Hargraves Community Center.  Family Medicine staff members Katie Baillie, Dawn Brock, Sherry Hay and Tim Smith provided much need support at the event.

AWARDS

Anthony Viera received the UNC School of Medicine’s James W. Woods Junior Faculty Award from Dean Roper on September 13th.  The award supports promising young members of the medical school’s clinical faculty early in their academic career. Anthony will receive $3,000 to explore new ideas and ways of teaching students and residents, as well as investigating hypertension in primary care.

The Woods Award was established through the generosity of the late James Watson Woods, M.D., a cardiologist and professor in the School of Medicine from 1953 to 1983.  Anthony joins two other members of our department – Margaret Gourlay and Adam Zolotor – as Woods Award recipients.
